About the event
On this evening trip we’ll sail from Sausalito to Angel Island aboard the Cardoon with Captain Heather Richard and talk about the history of oysters in the San Francisco Bay - from the enormous oyster midden’s left by the Miwok’s, to Mark Twain’s literary ravings about these delicious bi-valves and Jack London’s youthful career as an oyster pirate. We’ll also discuss current efforts to restore them and all the benefits they bring their habitat, from filtering algae from the water, providing habitat, and even contouring the bottom of bays to mitigate sea-level rise.
Once on Angel Island, shuckers will be provided so you will learn how to open oysters like a pro. We’ll taste different varieties of oysters and talk about their “merrior” or how the different estuaries where they come from shape their unique characteristics. We also sample different types of sauces for eating them raw, and if the park service allows it, we’ll grill oysters and sourdough bread.
Then we’ll sail back to Sausalito under the moonlight.
Cost: $225 per person
