About the event
Rock crabs are tucked among rocky shorelines, pilings, jetties, and other underwater structure.While smaller than their famous Dungeness cousins, rock crabs make up for their size with large, powerful claws filled with sweet, highly sought-after meat. Their shells and carapaces are culinary treasures as well, imparting a deep, briny ocean flavor to stocks, bisques, stews, and gumbos.
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll gather just beneath the Golden Gate Bridge to explore the surprisingly rich marine ecosystem of San Francisco Bay. You’ll learn about the habitat and life cycle of local rock crabs, how tides and conditions influence crabbing, and how to catch them from a pier using a hoop net.
We’ll cover baiting and setting a hoop net, identifying the crabs we catch, handling them safely, and understanding local regulations and responsible harvesting practices. We’ll also talk about how to make the most of your catch in the kitchen—from extracting…
